An unmasked Governor Glenn Youngkin made a surprise stop at the Bradlee Shopping Center Safeway yesterday (Thursday), and afterward the Alexandria Democratic Committee tweeted for him to “get out of Alexandria.”

Youngkin, a Republican, spoke without a mask inside of the store at noon. He discussed “the elimination of the grocery tax, the rising costs of groceries, and the impacts of inflation on Virginia families and the high cost of living,” according to an email.

A male juvenile was assaulted twice on a DASH bus in December, according to Alexandria Police.

On Dec. 7, the victim reported to police that he was assaulted by an individual and then by a mob. It is not clear where the bus was when the victim was assaulted.


Starting tomorrow (Friday) and continuing through next week, a section of Mill Road in the Carlyle neighborhood will be closed off for nearby construction.

In a news release, the City of Alexandria said the section of roadway will be closed until the end of next week. The construction is likely part of the sprawling redevelopment around the Hoffman Town Center.

The City of Alexandria is dismissing erroneously issued red-light speeding citations from the intersection and providing full refunds to impacted customers. The city said camera was not using the 0.5 seconds of amnesty required by law.

In a glimpse at financial assessments for 2022, Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson said on Twitter that declining hotel revenue — and thus taxes paid to the city — will put more of the city’s tax burden on residents.

The decline of tax revenue for the City of Alexandria is just one part of a difficult financial recovery from the pandemic — one exacerbated by the omicron surge earlier this winter. While sales and meals tax have rebounded slightly, the dearth of hotel funding has even led the city to consider investing in a new hotel.


A 43-year Loudoun County man was arrested last month for allegedly pushing his girlfriend and causing her fracture her elbow.

After being wanted for outstanding warrants for more than a month, Thomas Abernathy was arrested on Jan. 20 and charged with malicious wounding and domestic assault and battery. He was released that same day on $1,500 and $500 bonds.
