Alexandria’s snow and ice removal teams are out in the city this morning (Sunday) following heavy overnight snowfall from Winter Storm Fern.

The city is advising residents to limit travel as crews travel to remove several inches of snowfall — at least 5.5 inches in Alexandria as of 8:25 a.m., according to trained spotters with the National Weather Service.


Former Alexandria Democratic Committee chair Sandy Marks is running for City Council, she announced this afternoon (Saturday).

As the first candidate to throw their hat into the ring, Marks’ campaign relies on Democratic City Councilman R. Kirk McPike winning his upcoming special election against Republican Mason Butler for Virginia’s 5th House District seat on Feb. 10.


The City of Alexandria has declared a Snow Emergency ahead of this weekend’s forecasted winter storm, requiring all vehicles to be removed from the city’s snow emergency routes by 10 p.m. tonight (Saturday).

An estimated 7 to 14 inches of “widespread significant snow” and sleet are expected to fall over the D.C. region this evening, leading to potential ice on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. In Alexandria, parking will be prohibited on the city’s snow emergency routes to allow for plowing and treatment.

Alexandria is one of more than 80 local governments and leaders to join a coalition challenging the Trump administration’s recent surge of federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota.

The coalition, co-led by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, has filed an amicus brief arguing that Trump’s deployment of more than 3,000 armed ICE agents to Minnesota — called “Operation Metro Surge” — is unconstitutional. Along with Alexandria, signatories include the governments of major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle, alongside legal nonprofit Public Rights Project.


The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is taking the recent results of an annual national airport satisfaction survey in stride, despite its airports falling below average scores.

Reagan National Airport ranked 20th and Dulles International ranked 23rd among 27 “large” airports — the middle size level among three categories — in the J.D. Power 2025 North American Airports Satisfaction Survey. The 27 airports in that cohort had an average satisfaction score of 656, and both Dulles (612) and National (623) fell short of it.


A developer is proposing to construct 11 three-to-four-story townhomes on a vacant lot that is shared with a church in Seminary Hill.

Development company 614 Westbrad, LLC, wants to build 45-foot-tall three-story townhomes with roof-level lofts, terraces, and parking garages at 11 N. Quaker Lane, 21 N. Quaker Lane and 3369 Duke Street.


Potential collective bargaining agreements and redrawn school boundaries were factored into the latest budget proposal presented to the Alexandria City School Board last night (Thursday).

Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt proposed the $406.5 million combined funds budget for fiscal year 2027, a 3.7% increase from the last approved budget. The bulk of funds are in the $374.5 million operating budget, but it also includes school nutrition funds as well as grants and a special projects fund.


A Maryland man is being held without bond after allegedly making violent threats against two Alexandria judges, the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office announced yesterday (Thursday).

The suspect, 53-year-old Lindolfo Pedraza, of Cumberland, was arrested by Cumberland police at his home on Wednesday afternoon, after the judges showed ASO several threatening electronic communications. He was charged with two counts of threats of death or bodily injury, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of harassment by computer, and one count of stalking.
