Office of Historic Alexandria proposes fee changes for museums and services

The Office of Historic Alexandria is proposing a host of fee changes to offset the rising cost of running museums, maintaining historic sites and providing programming.

City Council will consider the proposal at its meeting Wednesday (April 29), the same night the city’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget will receive final approval.

“These fees support staffing, facility use, and educational services, while keeping many offerings free or reduced for City residents, Alexandria City Public Schools, and partner groups,” OHA Director Gretchen Bulova said in a memo to Council. “These changes impact a small portion of the existing fee structure.”

The new fees include charges for extended museum hours, group tours, school programming, document scans and reprints of OHA’s new and historic photos.

No changes were proposed for individual admission to city-run museums, which is free for city residents and varies by location for non-city residents.

One rate is going down. While it will still cost $5 per adult and $3 per child to visit the Freedom House Museum (1315 Duke Street), the group rate minimum fee has been lowered from $100 to $55.
