Grand jury indicts ex-D.C. police officer on multiple sexual assault charges in Alexandria

An Alexandria grand jury indicted a former D.C. police officer on more than two dozen felony charges today (Monday) related to a series of sexual assaults in Alexandria last year.

Timothy Valentin, 30, of Fort Washington, Md., is currently accused of multiple sexual assaults in Alexandria and Maryland that occurred between 2024 and 2025. The suspect, an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department until 2022, faces new charges including rape by force, rape by incapacitation and abduction with intent to defile in connection to three cases in Alexandria last year.

ACPS board asks City Council to postpone resolution vote on new school funding measure

The Alexandria City School Board is asking City Council to postpone voting on a resolution this week that would change how the city appropriates funding to the school system.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins introduced the proposal at City Council’s joint work session with the School Board on March 4. The new system would authorize Council to approve funding allocations by major classification, instead of an annual lump sum. School Board Chair Michelle Rief says that more discussion is needed.

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On March 9, 1855, stockholders for a new cemetery held a meeting to elect a president and board of directors. The location of the new cemetery, which was later named Ivy Hill, was described in the Alexandria Gazette as a ‘most beautiful one.'” [Historic Alexandria]

‘Empty Bowls’ Exceeds $75K Goal — “A total of 214 attendees packed the hall February 28, raising more than $81,000 through ticket sales, sponsorships, and silent auction. The amount surged past the organization’s $75,000 goal. UPDATED: Residents, churches appeal Traffic and Parking Board’s Braddock Road changes

Two appeals on the Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board’s approved Braddock Road changes to accommodate bike lanes are heading to City Council.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Pastor Kate Costa said the church is submitting an appeal Monday, March 9 after getting signatures from church members over the weekend. The appeal concerns the board’s Feb. 24 decision to remove on-street parking on Braddock Road, including an accessible parking space in front of the church.

Former Councilman Mo Seifeldein banks on grassroots support as fundraising trails Beyer

Former Alexandria City Councilmember Mo Seifeldein is second to Rep. Don Beyer in fundraising for the Aug. 4 Democratic primary race in the 8th Congressional District.

According to FEC filings through the end of 2025, incumbent Beyer led Democratic candidates with $1.16 million in fundraising. Seifeldein followed with over $117,000. The only other Democratic candidate reporting donations through the end of 2025 is fired State Department worker Michael Duffin, with over $23,000.

Utility work starting in Alexandria next week to replace aging water main pipes

Virginia American Water will embark next week on a six-month, $3 million water main replacement project affecting six street segments in Alexandria.

The project will replace 5,000 feet of aging four-inch and six-inch cast iron pipes at the end of their lifespan with modern eight-inch ductile iron pipe. The water main replacement and associated street restoration is expected to wrap in September, with contractor Utilities Unlimited working 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Ballyshaners Parade Weekend Is Here — “The Ballyshaners‘ 43rd annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is expected to draw thousands of spectators to celebrate alongside a lineup of performers and community organizers. JUST IN: Va. health officials partially lift Potomac River recreational advisory

The Virginia Department of Health has partially lifted its recreational water advisory for a portion of the Potomac River as repairs continue from January’s massive sewage spill.

The advisory, first issued Feb. 13, has now been lifted for a stretch of the river including Alexandria’s waterfront. The cleared area starts south at the Route 120 Chain Bridge and ends at the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge in King George County, according to a VDH announcement this afternoon (Thursday).
