Former pro boxer Tony “Da Beast” Suggs, former T.C. Williams High School principal John Porter, and the 1947 George Washington High School Baseball Team are heading to the hall of fame.

The Alexandria City Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame, that is. This year’s 16 inductees were approved for inclusion by the School Board on June 12, and the induction ceremony will take place on October 11.


A relocated children’s area, enhanced lighting and multi-use courts are just a few of the proposed recommendations to revitalize John Ewald Park (4452 Duke Street).

Plans have long been in the works for the West End park, and the city’s Park and Recreation Commission will hold its public hearing on the improvements on Thursday (June 26) at 7 p.m. at Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Avenue).


Alexandria police are urgently searching for Edith Walker, a 49-year-old woman who’s gone missing from the Taylor Run neighborhood. Walker was last seen near the 1100 block of E. Taylor Run Parkway.

Described as 5’3″ tall and 130 pounds with brown eyes and black hair, Walker’s disappearance is considered critical. The Alexandria Police Department is seeking the public’s help in locating her.


National Night Out is around the corner, and so is the deadline for Alexandria’s communities to register for the annual event.

The national event on Aug. 5 (Thursday) is intended to bring police closer to their communities with hot dogs, games, and raffles. The deadline to register your neighborhood is Tuesday, July 18.


An indecent exposure incident was reported early this morning in Alexandria’s Rosemont neighborhood.

The incident was reported at approximately 5:45 a.m. in the area of Commonwealth Avenue and Linden Street, and then police were called again at around 6 a.m. in the area of Ramsey Street and Adams Avenue. No injuries were reported, and police canvassed the area for 45 minutes, according to the police scanner.


The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will relocate its headquarters to the National Science Foundation (NSF) building in Alexandria, displacing approximately 1,800 NSF employees over the next two years, officials announced Wednesday.

HUD Secretary Scott Turner, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, and General Services Administration (GSA) Commissioner Michael Peters made the announcement at the NSF headquarters at 2415 Eisenhower Ave. on Wednesday (June 25), emphasizing taxpayer savings and improved working conditions for HUD employees.


The Savannah Bananas, an exhibition baseball team from Georgia, is taking over the Dunkin’ at 3325 Richmond Highway for two hours on Saturday (June 28).

Dunkin’ is the “official coffee and breakfast partner” of the Savannah Bananas, and from 9 to 11 a.m., players will go behind the counter to take orders, treat guests, and give away free merchandise.

Alexandria City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to provide a moral obligation backing the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s plan to acquire The Alate senior living facility for $56 million using Virginia Resources Authority bonds.

The 7-0 vote authorizes ARHA to purchase the 110-unit building at 1122 North First Street to relocate age-eligible residents from the deteriorating Ladrey Senior High-Rise at 300 Wythe Street. The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development has terminated operating support for Ladrey and issued vouchers to relocate its 168 residents.


The Alexandria City Council received a comprehensive update on Tuesday night (June 24) regarding a proposal to transition Alexandria City High School students from traditional school buses to the city’s DASH public transit system. City Manager James Parajon recommended a three-phase implementation, beginning in the 2026-27 school year.

The initiative, which has been under study for five months through a joint City Council and School Board subcommittee, aims to provide student transportation that is safe, reliable, effective, and efficient while supporting environmental goals and potentially reducing costs.
