The city of Alexandria opened two more sections of the Holmes Run Trail on Friday, creating a continuous off-street path for walkers and cyclists between Beauregard Street and Eisenhower Avenue.
Sites 2 and 3 of the multi-year trail repair project were completed in September, according to Jack Browand, deputy director of Park Services, Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities. Site 2 encompasses the Holmes Run Trail Bridge at Morgan Street Cul-de-Sac, while Site 3 covers the trail section at North Ripley Street.
“Final minor construction and cleanup activities will continue for one to two weeks, weather permitting,” Browand wrote in an email to the Holmes Run Trail Repairs Stakeholder Group on Thursday evening.
The openings mark significant progress on repairs that began after severe flooding in 2018 and 2019 damaged multiple sections of the trail. The $12.2 million project has been funded through city Capital Improvement Program funds and a Northern Virginia Transportation Authority grant, according to the city’s project website.
Site 4 at 4600 Duke St. was completed in August 2023. However, major construction continues at Site 1 in Dora Kelley Park, where a new bridge is being built. That section is expected to close within the next two to four weeks, with construction finishing in fall 2026.
City staff will post detour information before the Site 1 closure begins.
