An Alexandria man faces a felony charge after allegedly driving the wrong way down a closed Arlington roadway and threatening a traffic worker early Thanksgiving morning.
The incident occurred at around 1:15 a.m. in the area of N. Highland Street and N. Hartford Street in the Clarendon neighborhood. A transportation safety specialist (TSS) from the Arlington County Police Department confronted the 41-year-old suspect, who had driven in a closed-off area marked by traffic cones.
Northern Virginia residents and Alexandria officials gathered last night (Monday) for the city’s annual World AIDS Day commemoration to encourage public health education and community testing.

A 51-year-old man charged with the second-degree murder of Robert Knott in Alexandria’s West End pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity yesterday (Monday).
Ricky Dehate was charged with second-degree murder when Knott, 54, died from his injuries on Sept. 13, 2023, two days after he was kicked and punched unconscious at a bus stop in the 2500 block of N. Van Dorn Street. Dehate’s attorney, Mike Hadeed, doesn’t deny that his client committed the act, but said he did it while having a psychotic episode.
Mayor Alyia Gaskins and an editor at The Atlantic are scheduled to participate in a public discussion on affordable housing expansion and policies next week.
The discussion with Gaskins and the magazine’s Deputy Executive Editor, Yoni Appelbaum, will offer “timely insight into the policy choices and historical decisions that have shaped today’s [housing] crisis — and what leaders can do differently moving forward,” according to a release.
The Alexandria Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred near the Holmes Run Trail last night (Monday).
Around 8:15 p.m., a male victim reported to APD that a masked man had approached him with a handgun at the 200 block of S. Jenkins Street before stealing his driver’s license and debit card. The suspect reportedly fled in the direction of the Holmes Run Trail, according to APD dispatches.

An Alexandria developer has proposed replacing a small outdoor parking lot in Old Town with a new mixed-use apartment building.
Windmill Hill is seeking approval to build a three-story, eight-unit apartment building with ground floor retail at 220 and 224 S. Peyton Street. The 4,400-square-foot property is currently home to a 16-space outdoor parking lot located about a quarter-mile from the King St.-Old Town Metro station.
Applications for Alexandria’s Stormwater Utility (SWU) Fee Credit Program opened today (Monday).
Property owners can apply for credits electronically or with hard copies through Feb. 15, 2026, and may be eligible for up to a 50% reduction on SWU fees “by installing eligible practices,” according to a city announcement.
The city of Alexandria will showcase progress and accept feedback for the ongoing Duke Street Land Use Plan during an open house next week.

A pet store from Del Ray opened its newest location over the weekend at the Belle View Shopping Center.
The Dog Store is now open at 1612 Belle View Blvd, replacing a vacancy left by the Pampered Pet Boutique & Bakery earlier this year. Owner Paul Haire founded the shop’s first location in Del Ray in 2014, after opening Your Dog’s Best Friends daycare in 2003.
