It was a busy week in Alexandria, but this week had a particularly busy Tuesday night for first responders.
First was a standoff on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge around 7 p.m. when police from other regional jurisdictions chased an armed assault suspect onto the bridge.

🌤️ Today’s weather: Expect partly sunny skies and a high near 47, accompanied by calm winds turning northwest at around 5 mph. For Wednesday night, there’s a slight chance of rain and snow showers after 1am, with cloudy skies and a low around 34. Winds will be light and variable, and the precipitation chance remains at 20%.
(Updated 12:15 a.m.) A three-alarm fire sent plumes of smoke up into the skies above Wheeler Avenue earlier this evening.
The 4000-4400 blocks of the street burned earlier this evening, but by 11 p.m. the fire had been contained.
The week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is traditionally a little slow, but there was still plenty of news around Alexandria.
The top story was yet another office-to-apartment conversion planned for Old Town North, part of a trend of developers moving away from office space in the wake of the Covid pandemic and using those buildings for sorely needed housing.
