Preparations for Mayor’s Cup — “The women’s teams and the men’s [rugby] team for the Mayor’s Cup are practicing and getting ready for our big trip to Scotland. Traffic and Parking Board Meets Monday — “The Traffic and Parking Board will hold its next public hearing on Monday, July 27 at 7 p.m. Docket materials have been posted for the upcoming meeting. Morning Notes for July 24, 2026

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On July 24, 1946, court approval was sought by the owners of the former residence of Dr. and Mrs. Hugh McGuire at 201 S. Washington Street to demolish the historic structure to make way for contemporary office development of the site. This action prompted a major citizen effort to preserve the structure, built in 1837 as a center for learning and knowledge known as The Lyceum. The original concept to build such a structure in Alexandria was led by local schoolmaster Benjamin Hallowell, and when finished the building included the Alexandria library, exhibits of natural history and science and a large lecture hall on the second floor. Today, the building houses The Lyceum, Alexandria’s History Museum, and is one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the city.” [Historic Alexandria]

Key Deadlines for Aug. 4 Primaries — July 24 is the deadline for voter registration and to request a mail ballot for the Aug. 4 Democratic and Republican primary elections. After that date, same-day registration will allow new voters to cast a provisional ballot. [ALXnow]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On July 23, 1830, the Alexandria Common Council authorized the purchase of 500 shares of stock in the Alexandria Canal Company. When completed in 1845, the canal ran from a terminal in Georgetown, across the Potomac on an aqueduct, along the west side of the Virginia shore, over Four Mile Run on another aqueduct, into Alexandria, and descended to the Potomac by means of three lift locks which lowered barges to the river.” [Historic Alexandria]

Impact to Yard Waste Collections — “The City of Alexandria will slide select yard waste collection routes regularly scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday (July 22-23) to Friday, July 24 due to operational changes. No other services will be impacted.” [City of Alexandria]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On July 22, 1907, Luna Park granted free admission to Alexandria’s public school students, and between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., the students were given free access to all concessions at the amusement park.” [Historic Alexandria]

Data Center Application Filed Near Alexandria Border — “Starwood Capital Group is moving forward with its plan to develop two data centers off Edsall Road in Fairfax County near the Alexandria line. A permit application and plans for the first building at Plaza 500 were filed July 16, according to Fairfax County documents. The plans have not yet been approved.” [Washington Business Journal]

New Pirate and Ghost Tour in Alexandria — “Ghost stories are getting a pirate-inspired twist in Old Town Alexandria. Alexandria Colonial Tours is putting a new spin on its ghost storytelling with its new River Route Pirate Tour. The experience runs on Fridays and Saturdays and tells the city’s past with tales of pirates, ghosts, and crimes committed along the Potomac River.” [Northern Virginia Magazine]

Wildfire Smoke Outbreak Named Among Worst in Modern History — “A thick, pungent plume of wildfire smoke swept into the region Thursday night behind a cold front and lingered into at least Saturday morning. It was reminiscent of the historic smoke outbreaks of June 2023, when many in the region first experienced air pollution of this magnitude.” [Capital Weather]

Taylor Run Stabilization Project Meeting Today — “Join the City of Alexandria for the upcoming Taylor Run Infrastructure Stabilization Project meeting on Monday, July 20, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. During the meeting, City staff will present the 60% design plans and discuss the proposed improvements intended to protect vulnerable infrastructure along sections of Taylor Run while minimizing impacts on the surrounding environment.” [City of Alexandria]
