Early voting for the Nov. 3 general election in Alexandria will kick off Friday (Sept. 18) at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections.
The general election ballot will include races for Sen. Mark Warner’s (D-Va.) U.S. Senate seat and Rep. Don Beyer (D-8)’s 8th Congressional District seat. Three constitutional amendments — regarding reproductive rights, same-sex marriage and voting rights for former felons — are also on the ballot.
The congressional midterms will determine party control in the U.S. House and Senate for the remainder of President Donald Trump (R)’s second term.
Beyer, first elected in 2014 and seeking his seventh term, faces Republican Tony Sabio, Libertarian Shelly Arnoldi and independent Tim Sharman in the general election.
Warner, vying for his fourth term, is facing a challenge from Republican Bert Mizusawa, a retired Army major general.
Early in-person voting in Alexandria will run from Friday, Sept. 18 through 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. Voter ID is required to vote in person, or voters can sign an ID statement affirming their identity.

Alternatively, voters not already on the permanent absentee voting list can request a mail-in ballot. Applications are due to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. Voters may apply online, call 703-746-4050 to request one by mail or download one and return it by mail (132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA. 22314), fax (703-746-4540) or scanned email attachment ([email protected]).
Completed ballots must be returned to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, or postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by noon on Friday, Nov. 6. Ballot drop boxes will be provided at all polling places from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 and Beatley Library during early voting hours. A secure outdoor drop box under video surveillance is in front of the Office of Voter Registration & Elections, 24 hours a day through 7 p.m. on Nov. 3.
Voters planning to cast a ballot in person should not apply ahead of time, the elections office says. If a voter decides to cast a ballot in person, they should bring their mail ballot to surrender at the voting location.
The voter registration deadline is Oct. 23. Voters may register, check their registration status or update their registration online or contact the Office of Voter Registration and Elections. After the voter registration deadline, same-day registration is offered to let new voters cast a provisional ballot.
On Election Day, voters can head to their assigned polling place between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. and present an accepted form of ID to cast a ballot. A voter’s assigned polling place is listed online with voter registration.
