Early voting to begin this week for August congressional primaries in Alexandria

Early voting is set to begin Thursday, June 18 for 2026 congressional primary elections in Alexandria, according to the city’s Office of Voter Registration and Elections.

The elections on Aug. 4 will include a Democratic primary for U.S. House of Representatives in the 8th Congressional District and a Republican primary to decide who will run against Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) for U.S. Senate. Virginia voters are not registered by party, so they can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary.

Sen. Mark Warner (D) and his wife, Lisa Collis, shared today (Monday) that their daughter Madison Warner has died.

The 36-year-old died after decades of battling juvenile diabetes and other health issues, according to their statement.

U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine announced Tuesday that crucial aviation safety legislation has passed out of the Senate Commerce Committee in response to the Jan. 29 mid-air collision near Reagan National Airport that killed 67 people.

The Rotorcraft Operations Transparency and Oversight Reform Act, or ROTOR Act, passed unanimously and addresses systemic failures identified in the crash between American Airlines Flight 5342 and an Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River.

Virginia senators demand Education Department restore funding to Northern Virginia schools

U.S. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner sent a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon on Monday demanding the immediate reversal of federal funding cuts to Alexandria City Public Schools and four other Northern Virginia school districts over transgender student policies.

The letter represents the latest escalation in a monthslong standoff between the Trump administration and Northern Virginia schools that has put more than $300 million in federal funding at risk for more than 386,000 students across the five districts.

U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine condemned the Trump administration Monday for beginning the process to cut federal funding from Alexandria City Public Schools and four other Northern Virginia districts over their refusal to change transgender student policies.

The senators released a joint statement Monday as the U.S. Department of Education began suspending federal aid to the districts after they rejected demands to rescind policies allowing transgender students to use facilities matching their gender identity.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) introduced legislation today requiring Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to identify themselves and remove masks during routine immigration enforcement activities, citing concerns about unidentified officers conducting operations across Virginia communities.

The bill, co-sponsored with Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), establishes the same identification standards for ICE agents that currently apply to state troopers, sheriffs and local police officers. Warner says the legislation responds to increased ICE presence in Virginia and repeated instances of masked agents causing panic during arrests.

Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) sharply criticized the Trump administration’s successful effort to cut $9 billion in previously approved federal spending, warning that the reductions will damage America’s global influence and national security interests.

Speaking to Virginia media Thursday (July 17), Senator Warner said the Senate’s late-night passage of what’s known as a rescission package represents a dangerous retreat from decades of American leadership worldwide. The legislation strips about $8 billion from foreign assistance programs and more than $1 billion from public broadcasting.

Virginia’s two Democratic senators voted against a Republican budget package that passed the Senate Tuesday morning in a 51-50 vote, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote after an all-night session.

The nearly 1,000-page legislation now returns to the House where its passage remains uncertain. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine released a joint statement opposing the measure.

Alexandria’s congressional delegation is escalating pressure on federal officials regarding the controversial decision to relocate the National Science Foundation (NSF) from its Alexandria headquarters to accommodate the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), according to a letter obtained exclusively by ALXnow.

Just one day after Senator Mark Warner criticized the move and demanded a full cost-benefit analysis during a media availability, the Virginia delegation has now formalized their concerns in writing.
