Notes: What parents need to know about enrolling children in Alexandria’s 2025-26 Afterschool and Out of School Time Programs

The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities today (June 5) announced details for its Out of School Time Program (OSTP) for school-aged children in kindergarten through sixth grade for the 2025-26 school year.

The afterschool program begins Monday, August 18, 2025, and ends Friday, June 12, 2026, from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the following recreation centers and Alexandria City elementary schools:

  • Charles Barrett Recreation Center
  • Charles Houston Recreation Center
  • Leonard “Chick” Armstrong Recreation Center
  • Mount Vernon Recreation Center
  • Patrick Henry Recreation Center
  • William Ramsay Recreation Center
  • Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School
  • John Adams Elementary School
  • Douglas MacArthur Elementary School

The OSTP fee is $892 for the school year; $305 with documentation for free or reduced-price school meals; $255 with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits; or $149 with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits. Fees are subject to increase beginning July 1.

The Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center will offer its Youth Achieving Greatness Program (YAG), featuring structured enrichment activities designed to enhance learning, independence, socialization, and leadership skills. The program begins on August 18, 2025, and ends on June 12, 2026. The program fee for the school year is $1,495. Financial assistance is available. The YAG program is open only to City residents and does not follow the Pre-registration schedule; instead, it follows the general registration process listed below.

The school year OSTP programs are open only to City residents and will follow the pre-registration and general registration procedures outlined below.

A pre-registration period will be provided for Alexandria residents who qualify for financial assistance. Beginning June 8 through June 13, registration and financial assistance forms will be available online, and printed forms will be available for pickup and drop-off at the following locations (call the location to verify operating hours):

  • Leonard “Chick” Armstrong Recreation Center, 25 West Reed Ave., 703.746.5554
  • Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave., 703.746.5556
  • Patrick Henry Recreation Center, 4653 Taney Ave., 703.746.5557
  • William Ramsay Recreation Center, 5650 Sanger Ave., 703.746.5558

Applicants are required to verify eligibility by completing and submitting the pre-registration forms by June 13. All submissions will be placed in a computerized lottery, which will randomly select the order of eligible applicants and generate a waitlist if needed. Selected applicants will be contacted by email and/or phone beginning June 18 with additional information on program registration. Applicants must complete the enrollment process by June 24.

On Wednesday, June 25, at 9 a.m., any remaining openings will be available using general online-only registration.

On Thursday, June 26, in-person and online registration for any remaining openings will be available. In-person registration can be completed at any neighborhood recreation center or Power-On after-school location during regular program operating hours.

👉 Alexandria’s School Board held its final public hearing on ACPS redistricting last night. ALXnow was present at the meeting and will provide full coverage later today. The School Board will make its final decision on redistricting at its meeting on June 12.

🗓️ It took three years to finish, and on Saturday, Alexandria will officially recognize the completion of the Hooffs Run Interceptor and a rejuvenated African American Heritage Park.

🗳️ Local leaders will join Levar Stoney, a Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, at a rally at 500 Montgomery Street on Saturday.

🎭 The Play That Goes Wrong will open at The Little Theatre with a sold-out show on Saturday night. Catch the show while you can through June 28.

🎶 The Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia is bringing chamber music performances to the Charles E. Beatley Central Library on Saturday and Sunday.

🧶 Make In Public Day, a community-wide celebration of creativity and craft, will be held across Alexandria on Sunday.
