Notes: Local basset hound honored as ‘Alexandria Animal of the Year’ in waterfront ceremony

Droopy-eared, adorable basset hound Barnabas was named Alexandria’s 2025 Animal of the Year earlier this year and a ceremony last honored the rescue dog, Patch reported.

Barnabas won the award by raising the most funds for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria’s 2025 calendar contest. Banabus was honored at a ceremony last Thursday outside Vola’s Dockside Grill on the waterfront.

Patch reported that the ceremony included special mentions to runner-up pets, including a cat, another dog and a hedgehog. Barnabas and the second and third prize winners won professional, glamorous photoshoots.

Barnabas and other pets raised $75,000 for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and the city is currendly working to assist shelters affected by Hurricane Helene.
