Alexandria is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued by the National Weather Service today until 9 p.m. tonight.

While skies are mostly clear as of 2:30 p.m., the forecast calls for a thunderstorm sometime before 5 p.m. and a chance of showers and thunderstorms continuing afterwards.

The National Weather Service warns of gusts as high as 21 mph, which could lead to fallen trees and other hazards. The warning noted that damaging winds are the primary threat, along with hail.

Rain is forecasted to continue into the evening before gradually clearing up with light showers after 8 p.m.

Alexandria saw storms yesterday as well, and while they weren’t too severe, there were power outages in Old Town and Maryland saw a rare tornado appearance.
