The owner of The Purple Goose in Del Ray says that she’s going to keep the kids clothing boutique open for at least another 20 years.
The Purple Goose (2005 Mount Vernon Avenue) has something for everyone, and includes a balloon boutique and monogram business. The store carries clothing and shoes for young children, as well as toys, books, puzzles and thousands of accessories.
Linda Johnson and her mom Paula Hoeltzel bought the business from the previous owner in the early 1990s. Over the last 30 years the store has become stuffed with inventory.
“We’re one of the longest running businesses on the Avenue,” Johnson told ALXnow. “We’re perfect if you need something for a party. You can get a little balloon, little candle, baby gifts. You can get a customer monogram for something goofy that you want to say.”
Johnson says customers are surprised to discover how long she’s been in business.
“Folks will come in and ask how long I’ve been here,” she said. “They think I’m going to say one or two years, and are shocked when I say it’s been more than 30 years.”
Johnson said that she’s got 20 years left in business.
“I’ve seen people in Del Ray have their own kids to now having their grandkids,” she said. “It’s been something else to see whole new generations growing up before my eyes.”
