Pedestrians will have to keep taking a detour when walking around Alexandria City Hall and Market Square.
The city government extended the north sidewalk closure in front of City Hall along King Street between N. Royal and N. Fairfax Streets through July 31. The sidewalk has been closed since June 15 for City Hall and Market Square renovations.
Pedestrians are advised to use detour walkways during the sidewalk closure. The DASH Bus stop in front of City Hall remains closed. Riders can board the King Street Trolley, Line 30, and Line 31 one block away on N. Pitt Street, and Line 34 riders can get off at the S. Royal and Duke Street or N. Fairfax and Princess Street stops.
City Hall, Market Square and the Market Square Parking Garage closed in early 2026 for the renovation project, and construction manager Grunley Construction Company started early construction work on site. Many city services temporarily relocated to Del Pepper Community Resource Center or locations within Old Town.
According to the city, the project will repair aging parts of City Hall and improve technology, accessibility and security. The city is also demolishing and replacing Market Square and the two-level underground parking garage.
Bids from subcontractors for construction work beginning in the third quarter of 2026 were accepted through Thursday, July 11. The city estimates construction could take at least two years.
A livestream of construction progress is available on the city’s website.
