The Dog Store to close June 27 in Del Ray, vows to find new location

The Dog Store on Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray will shut down on Saturday, June 27, its owner said on social media.

Shop owner Paul Haire said that the shop is closing due to “circumstances beyond our control.” The 2301 Mount Vernon Avenue location remains open for in-store sales through June 27. After that, it will temporarily move from 2301 Mount Vernon Avenue to Haire’s dog boarding facility Your Dog’s Best Friends at 2000 Richmond Highway. The business will continue to offer online ordering with free delivery.

The Dog Store has been at the Del Ray location since 2014, and a second location opened late last year in the Belle View Shopping Center in Fairfax County.

“Over the years, it has been a joy to serve you and your dogs, and we are deeply grateful for the trust, support, and community you’ve shown us,” Haire said.

Haire said that he wants to open another store in Del Ray.

“Rest assured that as soon as we can find a suitable location, we will fully reopen on the Avenue,” Haire wrote. “Over the years it has been a joy to serve you and your dogs, and we are deeply grateful for the trust, support, and community you’ve shown us.”

In 2024, the store won the Heart of Del Ray award from the Del Ray Business Association.

Earlier this year, a former groomer at Your Dog’s Best Friends was found guilty of felony animal abuse after a dog died in his care.
