It’s a marshmallow world in Alexandria this morning (Friday) as the snowy regional forecast is expected to continue into the afternoon.
The National Weather Service’s Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect until 4 p.m. today, with total snow accumulation estimated around one inch. As a result, residents should “plan on slippery road conditions.”
Alexandria City Public Schools operated on a two-hour delay this morning, and the city’s snowplows are expected to be brining the streets.
Metrobus is making service adjustments on a route-by-route basis, and Metrorail is expected to have no weather impacts. WMATA is continuing to monitor weather conditions, according to an update on X this morning.
Crews are treating walkways, escalators and above-ground station platforms this morning.
DASH has issued the following detour service alerts in Del Ray and Old Town this weekend ahead of the Holiday Boat Parade, Scottish Christmas Walk Parade and Del Ray’s Holiday Season Kickoff.
Due to the weather, the city’s Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road has extended its operating hours from 7 p.m. tonight through 7 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday).
The city also offers a variety of warming center locations at recreation centers and public libraries, including the Charles Houston Recreation Center, the Patrick Henry Recreation Center and the Ellen Coolidge Burke Branch Library.

The snowfall comes just a day before the city’s Scottish Christmas Walk Parade and Holiday Boat Parade in Old Town. Both parades are rain-or-shine (or snow!) events.
The city reminds parade attendees to dress warm. They may also warm up on heated DASH buses, which will be stationed near 421 King Street from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 2 King Street from 1:30-8 p.m., according to the city.
