Alexandria will conduct a pre-construction meeting for the Fort Ward Park playground later this month.
The city will conduct the virtual meeting on Monday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. and provide information on the project construction and archaeological monitoring. Construction is expected to start this fall and be finished next summer, according to the city.
Planning for the playground redevelopment goes back years, and the new park will be constructed near its current location at the top of a hill.
According to the city:
The existing playground will be relocated to the top of the hill from its current location as determined through community and stakeholder engagement that began in 2023. The relocation of the playground supports objectives of the approved Fort Ward Park and Museum Area Management Plan to enhance park accessibility and meet ADA standards.
The updated playground will feature play equipment suitable for children ages 2-12 years including accessible play components, and fabric canopies to provide shade. Other improvements include new ADA parking, an accessible ramp entrance, an accessible water fountain, benches, bike parking, and picnic tables.
