
The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Alexandria and the surrounding area.
The warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m., and NWS says that damaging wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour could cause trees and large branches to fall.
According to NWS:
At 4:57 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Newington, or over Springfield, moving southeast at 10 mph.
HAZARD…60 mph wind gusts.
IMPACT… Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.
