🚨 You need to know
Alexandria residents will get their first comprehensive look at the city’s health landscape when the Alexandria Health Department hosts a community presentation of its 2025 State of Health Report on Tuesday, July 8, at the Nannie J. Lee Memorial Recreation Center (1108 Jefferson Street). The event, scheduled from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., will feature Mayor Alyia Gaskins alongside health department staff and community leaders discussing the findings of a year-long Community Health Assessment.
The report, which analyzed over 200 health indicators and incorporated citywide survey data, paints a complex picture of Alexandria’s well-being. While the city generally outperforms state and national health benchmarks, significant disparities emerge when examining data at the neighborhood level.
The assessment reveals that Black and Hispanic/Latino residents, along with those in lower-income households and specific neighborhoods, face higher risks for poor health outcomes—a pattern the report attributes to decades of policy decisions that have created unequal access to health-supporting resources. The data shows mixed progress since the last assessment in 2019, with improvements in areas like insurance coverage and pediatric asthma hospitalization rates, while other indicators like teenage cigarette smoking have worsened.
Looking ahead, the health department plans to use these findings to develop a Community Health Improvement Plan in partnership with the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria. The community-driven approach will focus on practical strategies for the next five years, building on what residents identified as the city’s greatest health assets: strong community relationships, diversity, and opportunities for civic engagement. Free food and interpreters will be available at Tuesday’s event, with doors opening at 6:15 p.m.
