Alexandria to Hold Community Meeting for Mount Vernon Trail Sidewalk Expansion
The City of Alexandria will host a virtual community meeting next Tuesday to discuss upcoming improvements to the Mount Vernon Trail along East Abingdon Drive. The pre-construction meeting is scheduled for July 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will cover details about a sidewalk widening project planned for the area north of Slater’s Lane.
The project addresses a long-standing safety concern along this popular section of the regional trail system. Currently, the Mount Vernon Trail in this area measures just 4.5 feet wide, making it difficult for cyclists, joggers, and walkers to pass each other safely. The city plans to double the trail width to 10 feet, aligning it with the standards used throughout Alexandria’s trail network and allowing users to travel side by side more comfortably.
The improvement was identified as a Top 10 Priority Trail Crossing/Transition Improvement in the city’s Transportation Master Plan, specifically within the Pedestrian & Bicycle Chapter. The National Park Service’s Mount Vernon Trail Corridor Study also flagged insufficient trail widths as a general challenge and recommended widening where feasible. The project aligns with Alexandria’s broader Mobility Plan strategy to create a safe, well-maintained, and comfortable bicycling network throughout the city.
Construction on the federally funded project is set to begin August 4, weather permitting. During the virtual meeting, city officials will present construction plans and discuss logistical details, including work hours, anticipated parking restrictions, and any lane closures that may impact traffic flow. Community members are encouraged to participate in the question-and-answer portion to voice concerns about the project timeline and impacts.
Registration is required to attend the Zoom webinar at zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_XZCmuepNSOeIrZPAhXliJQ. The project is funded through a federal grant administered by the Virginia Department of Transportation, with additional information available on the city’s website at alexandriava.gov/go/4189.
