WAMU spoke with Afghan refugees living and working around Alexandria and explored the challenges and opportunities they face.
For many, fleeing Afghanistan and their perilous journeys to the United States have come with a chance at a better life. WAMU spoke with one unnamed man who was 17 when he was separated from his family in the rush to flee Kabul. With assistance from the State Department, the teen was able to settle in Alexandria and graduated from Alexandria City High School. He now plans on attending Northern Virginia Community College to work on computers and cyber security while working at Goodwin House and helping other Afghan families settle in the area.
WAMU reported the man, like other refugees, has faced loneliness and heartache in the United States as he lives in sparse conditions, separated from his family. Fortunately his mother, father, and three brothers were able to reach Pakistan and he is working with a non-profit to try to bring them to the United States.
WAMU also spoke with other refugees like Shafi Amani, who serves shawarma at his Seven Guys, Halal food truck at the King Street Metro station. While Amani’s family faced challenges during their escape — his daughter suffered a series of strokes during their escape — his family is adapting to life in the United States, learning English and working on getting his asylum claim approved.
