The Alexandria Times’ Alexandria Journalism Project did an investigative report into reportedly pretty awful conditions at the Mason at Van Dorn apartments in Alexandria’s West End.
The issues plaguing the apartment complex were extensively detailed by the Alexandria Journalism Project, from groups of children throwing things with residents and brawling to health hazards like pervasive vermin infestations and mold.
Residents told the Alexandria Journalism Project that crime in the neighborhood has skyrocketed, part of what Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter said was an unsettling upward trend in youth violence.
The Alexandria Police Department acknowledged “concerns related to quality-of-life issues” at the apartment complex, noting 606 calls for service from the apartment complex in 2024.
The report also detailed health hazards on the site, including roach infestations, overflowing trash and more. Alexandria Director of Zoning Gregg Fields told the Alexandria Journalism Project that frequent turnover in staff at the site makes communication with the site owners difficult.
Owners Bridge Investment Group bought the property last March denied in an email to the Alexandria Journalism Project that any of the problems exist at the site.
