Alexandria Living Magazine reported that U.S. Rep. Don Beyer’s office is looking into legislation to allow speed cameras and other roadway changes on the George Washington Parkway.

The speed cameras and other changes would be coming to the George Washington Parkway south of Alexandria in the Belle Haven areas.

Alexandria Living Magazine reported that Beyer plans to introduce legislation in January to authorize the use of speed cameras on the GW Parkway. Speed cameras were previously dismissed as too expensive for the National Park Service (NPS) because the NPS was not the recipient of revenue generated by the cameras, but Beyer’s legislation specified that revenue from the speed cameras should be returned to NPS for Parkway work.

Beyer said he will also be requesting federal funds for the upcoming year for continued safety improvements at the Belle HAven and Belle View intersections, including curbs and replacement of intersectional pylons.

The new cameras on the Parkway follow a recent trend for the area, with Alexandria and Fairfax getting their first speed cameras in recent years.
