Here at ALXnow we do local government, business and crime stories: but our real heart is in exploring the weird side of Alexandria.

In true National Treasure style, WTOP’s Matt Kaufax and Alexandria Historian Dan Lee dove into the Masonic history of a little-known memorial in Alexandria: the War Memorial.

The pillar near the Amtrak/King Street Metro station in Old Town. It received a new plaque honoring Alexandrians that died in the Vietnam War.

Lee said the marble that composed the War Memorial was supposedly from the marble used to build the nearby George Washington Masonic Memorial and was possibly originally constructed to be a column of the interior hall of the Masonic temple. The story that’s been passed down, according to Lee, that the column was damaged during construction and, instead of throwing it out, it was repurposed into use as a memorial.
