A flash flood warning is in effect for Alexandria and other nearby localities after storms last night, with more rain likely ahead today.

The flash flood warning is in effect until 11 a.m.

“At 8 a.m., doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area, between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen,” the National Weather Service said. “The expected rainfall rate is 2 to 4 inches in one hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.”

Fortunately (knock on wood) there aren’t too many power outages in Alexandria so far. 83 customers are without power in Del Ray. Just outside the city, around 1,189 customers are without power in Lincolnia.

School isn’t back yet for most Alexandria students, but those at Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School will be going in two hours late.
