Bishop Ireton High School wants new bell tower for its chapel

After extensive modernizations the last seven years, Bishop Ireton High School (201 Cambridge Road) now wants to add a new bell tower and new roof to its chapel renovation project.

There’s no word in the proposal as to whether the bell tower (on top of which would sit a three-foot-tall crucifix) will include a bell, if it will ring, how loudly and when.

Bishop Ireton’s development special use permit application will go before the Planning Commission on June 27.

According to the application:

The DSUP will only permit the installation of the roof work including the gable roof and bell tower and replacement of a portion of a flat roof to the west of the chapel.

The private school’s previous DSUP was approved in 2017, and since then the Catholic Diosece of Arlington has built a 44,000-square-foot technology wing with a cafeteria, classrooms, a new office and auxiliary gymnasium.

The architect for the project is Alexandria-based C.J. Howard Architecture.
