Tonight, isolated severe thunderstorms are expected to roll through Alexandria, but the National Weather Service (NWS) said the real threat is severe winds.

Alexandria and much of the rest of the region have been placed on a hazardous warning outlook today (Friday).

“Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon into the early evening,” NWS said. “The primary threat is damaging wind gusts.”

On the brighter side, no hazardous weather is expected for the rest of the weekend.

Damaging wind gusts mean Alexandrians should prepare for the possibility of power outages — though Dominion has been upgrading some of its infrastructure to be more resilient.

Undergrounding power lines would prevent damage from winds, and around 89% of ALXnow readers said they want Dominion to step up its undergrounding efforts, but Dominion has previously said undergrounding more power lines would be prohibitively expensive.
