Tonight, residents can meet the two final candidates for the principal position at Mount Vernon Community School (2601 Commonwealth Avenue) on Zoom.
After tonight’s meet-and-greet, the finalists to lead the Del Ray school will interview with Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt on Thursday and the new principal is expected to be hired by the School Board in a special meeting on Thursday, July 20.
The candidates, whose identities aren’t yet public, will meet with community stakeholders on Zoom from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
“We expect to have a new principal in place before the start of the new school year,” Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt wrote in a June 26 letter.
Kay-Wyatt said that the process is being run by former Alexandria City High School Principal John Porter and Rene Pachal, the acting executive director of ACPS human resources.
“Ultimately, the selected principal will be a school leader who can provide excellent educational, social, and personal outcomes for students, staff, parents, and the community,” Pachal wrote.
An ACPS community survey on the MVCS principal position is also open until Wednesday.

The Principal, Elementary directs the development of the school vision and establishes and maintains the school philosophy and educational programs consistent with community characteristics and school division goals and practices.
This job reports to the Executive Director of School Leadership.
Education: Master’s degree in related field.
Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or eligibility to obtain one, with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision.
- Minimum of three years of successful experience as an administrator (assistant principal or principal).
- Experience in elementary curriculum and instruction, including programs for special education (particularly inclusion models), ELL, talented and gifted, and compensatory education.
- A performance record that demonstrates high integrity, vision, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to diverse schools.
- A performance record grounded in the ACPS Core Values of Welcoming, Equity Focused, Empowering, Innovative, and Results Driven.
- Knowledge of Dual Language Instruction highly preferred

- Articulates a clear instructional vision with a school-wide focus on teaching and learning that is data-driven, standards-aligned, and rooted in the ACPS Strategic Plan.
- Demonstrates how to lead and guide Dual Language instruction
- Demonstrates knowledge of how to use instruction to reach student achievement goals.
- Able to identify and describe effective instructional practices and how to provide feedback, coaching, and professional development to teachers and assistant principals to improve the quality of instruction throughout the school.

If you had a chance to enhance a child’s future with a time commitment of less than 2 hours a week, how would you respond? You have that opportunity right now to join over 200 Alexandrians as a reading tutor volunteer with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC).
ATC tutors work with one child in kindergarten, first, or second grade in Alexandria public schools who need extra help with reading. Tutors meet with their Book Buddy 1-2 times each week for 30 minutes October-May at school, during school hours. Many struggling readers only receive one-on-one instruction through this program, and it makes all the difference. Last year, ATC served 195 children, of whom 82% ended the year reading on grade level and 96% made substantial reading gains. But the need is great, and we are still seeing learning lags from the pandemic.
This year, ATC plans to significantly increase the size of the program to reach over 250 students and to serve every elementary school in Alexandria. This is very exciting news, but we will only succeed if we can recruit more tutors. ATC trains you, matches you with a child, and provides ongoing lesson materials and support.
