A pedestrian safety improvement project near George Washington Middle School and Charles Barrett Elementary School is slated to receive $2.17 million in federal funding.
The project, phase two of the city’s Safe Routes to School Crossing Improvements, aims to bolster student safety and “strengthen connectivity to nearby neighborhoods” at the schools by installing curb extensions with crosswalks, shortening crossing distances, improving bus stops and removing a slip lane.
Ten weekends of Metro closures between Pentagon City and Reagan National Airport start tomorrow (Saturday), affecting Blue and Yellow Line trains departing and entering Alexandria.
Metrorail service will be suspended between those stations for a three-day weekend between Feb. 14-16, with free shuttle buses connecting the stations. During impacted weekends, both lines are expected to operate in “two segments” outside the closed stations every 12 minutes.
Alexandria City Council has unanimously endorsed a regional plan that would increase annual Metro funding by $460 million.
The “DMVMoves” plan from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) would require an estimated $136 million from Virginia, $152 million from Maryland and $173 million from D.C. before fiscal year 2029, with a 3% annual escalation, to support Metro’s capital needs.
Nearly three years after the Potomac Yard Metro station opened to the public, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is requesting that Alexandria pay an additional $35 million to close out all construction contracts and claims associated with the project.
The proposal will head to City Council for review this evening (Tuesday). If approved, WMATA says the funding increase would be the third and final modification to its funding agreement with the city.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is taking the recent results of an annual national airport satisfaction survey in stride, despite its airports falling below average scores.
Reagan National Airport ranked 20th and Dulles International ranked 23rd among 27 “large” airports — the middle size level among three categories — in the J.D. Power 2025 North American Airports Satisfaction Survey. The 27 airports in that cohort had an average satisfaction score of 656, and both Dulles (612) and National (623) fell short of it.
A series of weekend-long Metrorail closures between Pentagon City and Reagan National Airport will start next month, impacting Blue and Yellow lines departing and entering Alexandria.

The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission plans to elect Alexandria Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley as its new chair this week.
Bagley currently serves as the commission’s vice-chair and is a member of its Program Advisory Committee, following her initial appointment in 2022. This is in addition to her role as chair of the Virginia Railway Express’ Operations Board.
Alexandria woke up to a light blanket of snow this Sunday morning, prompting road treatments and some event cancelations in the city.
The National Weather Service reported one inch of snow in Alexandria this morning, as farmers’ markets in the West End and Old Town North were canceled due to the weather. Alexandria City Public Schools also canceled all school-sponsored activities scheduled before noon on school grounds.

The city released its 2025 AlexMoves survey yesterday (Monday), aiming “to gather a representative sample of trips made in the City of Alexandria.” The survey, also known as the Transportation Needs Assessment Survey, is conducted in partnership with firm Polco and will be open through Sunday, Dec. 28.

Aimee Seibert, a lobbyist for the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, said at the commission’s Dec. 4 monthly meeting that four different bills, two in each house of the legislature, are being prepared for consideration as part of an effort to add nearly a half-billion dollars annually in regional transit funding.
A new Metrobus route in Alexandria will offer transfer-free service to downtown D.C. starting later this month.
The new A29 bus will begin service on Sunday, Dec. 14, with rides offered every 24 minutes in the morning and afternoon via the I-395 Express Lanes, including during rush hours. Morning service will operate north to Metro Center, with afternoon service running south toward Van Dorn Street.
