Alexandria leaders mark 9/11 anniversary with call for unity, civility

Alexandria leaders commemorated the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on Thursday, Sept. 11, and reflected on the personal and societal impacts that followed.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins was joined by Sheriff Sean Casey, Fire Chief Felipe Hernandez, Jr., and Police Chief Tarrick McGuire onstage at Market Square in front of City Hall (301 King Street). Gaskins urged the audience to “remember the lives lost on 9/11 and to look forward with hope and a call to action for peace and a better world.”

Alexandria Sheriff’s Office launches recruiting website amid 12 deputy vacancies

After spending years searching for new deputies and lateral hires from other law enforcement agencies, the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office (ASO) has just launched a recruiting website, JoinASO.com.

In Alexandria, an entry-level deputy sheriff earns an annual salary of $61,375, and $67,667 for new deputies with law enforcement and/or Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services certifications. The office currently has 12 deputy vacancies, and the website launched on Aug. 13, according to ASO.

The news will travel fast around Del Ray, where the Alexandria Living Legend has lived and volunteered for decades. For the last five years, she’s also worked full-time as the accreditation manager for the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office (ASO).

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office is making free identification cards for kids at community events.

ASO launched the program last month with a donation from Dominion Energy. Look for ASO staff at public events, like the city’s monthly community cookouts, to get a free photo identification card for kids with a photograph and fingerprint. Parents will get the only copies of the identifications, and ASO will not store the data.

Casey’s perch seems secure. Even though he faces no opposition for the second time in his upcoming reelection in November, the Alexandria native says he’ll be knocking on doors and shaking hands to get votes in the months ahead.

After leaving the Alexandria Detention Center, Mahogany Jones wants to be a nurse aide.

On Tuesday, the 20-year-old mother of two joined her fellow inmates for the annual resource fair in the jail gymnasium. Jones is set to be released at the end of July for a felony shoplifting charge, and says she never wants to come back.

It’s going to be a smooth election season for Alexandria’s Democrat Commonwealth Attorney Bryan Porter and Sheriff Sean Casey.

No Republicans or other Democrats filed respective primary bids for both seats by the April deadline. That means that the only opposition the Porter and Casey face is from write-in candidates on election day in November, according to the city registrar’s office.

After years of planning and construction, Alexandria’s Virginia Tech Innovation Campus in Potomac Yard celebrated a grand opening today (Friday).

The Virginia Tech campus broke ground in 2021 and opened to students in January. A three-building campus is planned, with the first building coming online being an 11-story, 300,000-square-foot academic building that visitors toured today as part of the grand opening.

The Sheriff’s Office warned the scam has been occurring throughout the region, including in Alexandria.

Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins says that recent immigration enforcement raids in nearby jurisdictions have resulted in “fear, confusion, and concern,” and that the city won’t assist federal investigators.

In a statement posted on the city website today, the Democrat mayor said that Alexandria will always be a welcoming community where “all residents are supported, respected, and valued.”
