Alexandria leaders break ground on WestEnd development’s first residential building

Four years after the demolition of Landmark Mall, Alexandria officials and developers broke ground today (June 8) on the first residential building project for the 52-acre WestEnd site.

Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins was joined by many City Council members, as well as leaders from Foulger Pratt, Howard Hughes Communities and Silverstein Properties for the groundbreaking of the Aspect buildings at 5801 Duke Street. The seven-story Aspect will be connected by a sky bridge, which will also be used for the property’s fitness center, Foulger Pratt says.

Four men arrested for alleged $100K copper piping theft at Inova Alexandria Hospital site

One Alexandria man and three Maryland men face felony theft charges after being arrested for allegedly stealing approximately $100,000 in copper piping from the Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark construction site, according to a police search warrant affidavit.

Around 9 p.m. Saturday, April 11, a construction supervisor at the site called the Alexandria Police Department to report that the lock on a gate leading into the construction site had been cut and that more than $10,000 in tools had been stolen in the early morning hours of April 5. The construction manager later reported that more than $10,000 in tools had also been stolen the previous night, April 10.

Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark’s sprawling new complex reached a milestone on Monday, as the final structural beam was put into place.

Current and former city leaders joined Inova’s top executives for the topping-out ceremony, which was an hour after the topping out of the Inova Franconia-Springfield Healthplex (6361 Walker Lane) in the Franconia area of Fairfax County.

The Twig commits $2M to Inova Alexandria Hospital’s new Landmark campus

The Twig organization has committed to giving $2 million toward the new medical campus at Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark.

Inova representatives say the hospital is on track to open by the end of 2028 and will name its conference center in honor of The Twig for the contribution. Since 1933, the nonprofit has served as the Junior Auxiliary of Alexandria Hospital and has provided more than $7 million to the hospital through its thrift shop at 106 N. Columbus Street and other fundraising efforts.

Inova Alexandria Hospital gets top designation for maternity care in new national ranking

Inova Alexandia Hospital has been named one of the top hospitals in the country for maternity care in an annual ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

Alexandria’s hospital at 4320 Seminary Road was joined in the publication’s Fifth Annual 2026 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care list by its sister hospitals, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and Inova Loudoun Hospital. The facility was recognized as a birthing-friendly hospital, a designation measured by C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, severe unexpected newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates and birthing-friendly practices, among other measures.

Inova Alexandria Hospital recently donated a portable lifesaving device to the Alexandria Fire Department.

The ZOLL AutoPulse resuscitation system can cost upward of $7,500, and “delivers consistent, high-quality chest compressions during cardiac arrest, supporting critical care,” according to the AutoPulse website.

An employee at Inova Alexandria Hospital has been fired, and the Alexandria Police Department is investigating after a patient’s credit cards were stolen from a room at the hospital and used at a nearby store.

A woman in hospital scrubs with an Inova lanyard around her neck was later identified by an Inova Alexandria Hospital staffer, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit. The police have filed no charges, and although Inova did not disclose the employee’s job title, the hospital system confirmed that the employee is no longer employed at the hospital.
