Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark marks topping-out milestone

Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark’s sprawling new complex reached a milestone on Monday, as the final structural beam was put into place.

Current and former city leaders joined Inova’s top executives for the topping-out ceremony, which was an hour after the topping out of the Inova Franconia-Springfield Healthplex (6361 Walker Lane) in the Franconia area of Fairfax County.

Dr. J. Stephen Jones, CEO of the Inova Health System, said the 1.1 million-square-foot project at the former Landmark Mall site will be a hospital second to none when construction wraps up in 2028.

“It’s a little bit to take it all in,” Jones said, with the hospital campus behind him. “The bottom line is that today, this is all starting to feel very real, so I’m a little bit motivated to be here.”

City Council unanimously approved the project in 2023. Inova is targeting completion of the four-building hospital campus by 2028.

Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley was joined at the event by State Sen. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-39), Del. R. Kirk McPike (D-5) and City Council Members Abdel Elnoubi and Canek Aguirre. She said the new project, along with the WestEnd mixed-use development next door, will help revitalize the city’s West End and be easy for residents to navigate.

“The project here includes housing, and it’s changed the way we are designing our streets and our transportation systems,” Bagley said. “I’m just so excited about what people will see when they enter our city from the west and see this beacon of health care and hope and opportunity.”

When completed, the Inova campus at the former Landmark Mall (just off Interstate 395 at Duke Street) will include a 569,000-square-foot hospital with 192 beds, a 111,000-square-foot cancer center, an 83,000-square-foot specialty care center and a retrofitted 550-space parking garage. A 1,488-space below-grade parking garage is also planned, with at least 19 spaces set aside for electric vehicle charging.

Inova Alexandria President Dr. Rina Bansal said the day marked a new beginning for the city.

“The building behind me, the new Inova Alexandria Hospital, will reflect support and elevate the excellence of the people who will serve inside it,” Bansal said. “We’re creating spaces that are modern, intuitive, welcoming and designed not only for treatment, but for healing.”

Inova Alexandria Hospital opened 153 years ago and is the longest-serving hospital in Virginia. The current hospital building at 4320 Seminary Road opened in 1962 and could be converted into housing after Inova relocates.
