Inova Alexandria Hospital gets top designation for maternity care in new national ranking

Inova Alexandia Hospital has been named one of the top hospitals in the country for maternity care in an annual ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

Alexandria’s hospital at 4320 Seminary Road was joined in the publication’s Fifth Annual 2026 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care list by its sister hospitals, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and Inova Loudoun Hospital. The facility was recognized as a birthing-friendly hospital, a designation measured by C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, severe unexpected newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates and birthing-friendly practices, among other measures.

“We are honored that Inova Alexandria, Inova Fair Oaks, and Inova Loudoun hospitals have all been recognized as High Performing for Maternity Care by U.S. News & World Report,” said Dr. Larry Maxwell, president of Women’s Services at Inova, in a statement. “This distinction reflects the dedication and expertise of our entire team in providing safe, compassionate, and family-centered care.”

This is the fifth year in a row that Inova Fair Oaks has maintained this designation.

Jennifer Winston, a health data scientist at U.S. News & World Report, said the recognition means that the hospitals are national leaders in delivering maternity care.

“It’s a clear signal to expectant parents about where the highest standards of care are being practiced,” Winston said. “When parents see this designation, they can be assured they are choosing a hospital dedicated to exceptional, evidence-based maternity care.”

Inova Alexandria Hospital has been at its current location for more than 60 years. It will move to the city’s West End Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark, which is expected to open in 2028.
