Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana to open Alexandria location— “The Alexandria location will be at the Alexandria Commons Shopping Center, 3231 Duke Street. Frank Pepe, an Italian immigrant from just southwest of Naples, founded the pizzeria in 1925 in Connecticut after working for a macaroni manufacturer and a bakery… The thin-crust pizzas are fired in a coal oven. Fire Department rescues Golden Retriever with head stuck in Old Town fence — “On Saturday, Engine 201 arrived on a call to find a dog stuck on an iron fence experiencing distress. After requesting Rescue 209, first responders worked to remove the fence from the dog’s neck & return to the owner. The dog was uninjured. Great job by E201 & Rescue 209 B shift!” [Twitter]

Dory the Chihuahua only weighs 3.5 pounds, and she also has a ridiculously long tongue that hangs out when she sleeps.

“Chubbs’ favorite pastime is Fetch,” said Gina Hardter, a spokesperson with the AWLA. “He’s a bigger guy but you wouldn’t know it when you see him race after a tennis ball, and, unlike some pups…he actually knows how to bring it back too!”
Alexandria was spared from significant flooding this week after remnants of Hurricane Ida swept through the East Coast. The only flooding found was on lower King Street in Old Town, where businesses laid sandbags at windows and doorways.

It’s been a long week for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. This week as Hurricane Ida pounded its way up the East Coast, a team from the AWLA flew down and rescue five dogs and four kittens from a Louisiana shelter.
“We’re glad to work with this amazing team to help dozens of animals find their homes across our community,” said Katie DeWillems, AWLA’s director of operations.
Former City Councilman Connie Ring dies — “Carlyle Conwell “Connie” Ring, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2021, at his home at Goodwin House, Alexandria, Virginia… He was an appointed member of the Alexandria School Board from 1969 to 1978, and chairman from 1976 to 1978. Brewster is a meatball on a mission. At 50 pounds, the eight-year-old cuddle bug of a pit bull has a malignant tumor on his thyroid, and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is looking for a family to help him through surgery.
“He really is a goofy guy,” AWLA spokesperson Gina Hardter told ALXnow. “The team at the AWLA would be happy to walk adopters through his medical history, and we would highly recommend his new family consult with a veterinary oncologist to see if there is potential to operate on the tumor.”
Dynamic duo Chloe and Aggie are best friends, and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is giving the pair up for adoption.
Aggie, a 10-year-old hound mix, has been with four-year-old pub mix Chloe her entire life.
