Alexandria Now Has 170 COVID-19 Cases, City Asks Residents Not to Gather for Easter

Alexandria now has 170 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, an addition of 21 cases since yesterday.

The first and only death of a city resident due to the virus was announced on April 6, and the Alexandria Health Department did not release any information regarding the resident.

Inside Alexandria’s Emergency Operations Center (It’s Nearly Empty)

Alexandria’s Emergency Operations Center is fully operational through the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s nearly empty.

Ray Whatley, the city’s acting emergency manager, is operating the EOC with a skeleton crew of four full-time staff in the Public Safety Building at 2003 Mill Road. The EOC remains pivotal during the city’s first bonafide emergency since the facility opened last year.

Southern Towers Residents Prepared to Strike Over Rent — “Their goal is 1,000 signatures from the 2,300 total units. They want management to cancel rent until one month after the pandemic ends, address safety and cleaning concerns, and create a sliding scale for future rent payments based on income.” [WAMU]

Less Than Half of Alexandrians Will Get Full Stimulus Checks — “SmartAsset estimates that full stimulus check would go to just 49.57% of households in the City of Alexandria, and 65.92% would get some level of stimulus check. The full check of $1,200 would be sent to individuals with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of up to $75,000 and a reduced benefit would be sent to individuals earning up to $99,000, at which point it phases out completely.” [Alexandria Living]

Inova Alexandria Hospital at Half Capacity As COVID-19 Surge Begins

Inova Alexandria Hospital is at the beginning of a surge in COVID-19 cases, and says that hospital staff are acclimating to the new normal and are prepared for the days ahead.

The hospital is at half of its capacity and is currently treating about 60 patients for COVID-19, hospital CEO Dr. Rina Bansal told ALXnow.

Budget Cuts Push Back T.C. Expansion and Waterfront Redevelopment

(Updated 1:10 p.m.) As expected, this year’s $753.3 million city government budget will be significantly cut down — with a $46.6 million reduction from the operating budget and $140.6 million in the capital budget put forward in April.

City Manager Mark Jinks called the new document “Budget 2.0,” representing the possibility that its contents are subject to change at next Tuesday’s (April 14) City Council meeting and throughout the budget process. Jinks said the total projected revenue loss for the 2020 and 2021 fiscal year is $92.2 million, and that the sharp reduction in the budget is due to a deferral of the 2 cent tax residential tax increase initially proposed and a steep drop off in commercial tax revenue.
