Amazon is giving an additional $1 million to Alexandria and other local families impacted by COVID-19 to help pay for urgently needed items, including food, school supplies and clothing.

The money is in Amazon’s Right Now Needs Fund, which is available for all 18 Alexandria City Public Schools, as well as all 41 Arlington Public Schools.

Alexandria’s unemployment figures continue to trend downward with initial and continued claims, according to data from the Virginia Unemployment Commission.

For the week ending Sept. 26, the city had 3,282 continued claims, down from 3,503 claims for the week ending Sept. 19. There were also 4,036 continued claims for the week ending Sept. 12, and 4,343 claims for the week ending August 29.

Ringing in the new year in Alexandria is going to be a virtual and in-person experience this time around.

On Thursday, First Night Alexandria announced that due to the coronavirus pandemic its 26th annual New Year’s Eve celebration will be a hybrid event. The alcohol-free event usually draws thousands of people who participate by attending concerts all over the city. Midnight is celebrated on the waterfront with a countdown and a fireworks show.

Alexandria is experiencing an uptick in violent crime, with police reporting incidents all over the city.

Today, ALXnow broke the story about a West End shootout that left at least two people injured and has so far yielded two arrests. There were also a number of violent crime events that occurred during late night hours over the weekend in Del Ray, as well as calls for shots fired in Old Town and the West End on Friday and Sunday evenings.
