Despite mixed community reaction, the Alexandria School Board voted to convert Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School into a middle school and Patrick Henry K-8 School into an elementary school.

Alexandria’s two middle schools are both well over 100% capacity, and as budgeted, the conversion of Jefferson-Houston won’t start for a few years. That means that the strain at George Washington Middle School and Francis C. Hammond Middle School won’t be eased unless the Board takes an immediate action.

A nonprofit serving Arlandria’s Latino community is trying to raise some big bucks before the end of the year.

After a disappointing Spring2ACTion fundraiser earlier this year, Casa Chirilagua is trying to raise $120,000 to fund their programming to serve 400+ people, and also keep the lights on. The deadline for giving is Dec. 31.

It’s the first year of the new Career Investigation course for middle schoolers, and today’s class was observed by Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons and Alexandria City Public Schools leadership.

Parents with young kids can soon get a break. Mulberry Lane Play Café, a new daycare/ cafe/coworking office will officially open its doors in Del Ray on Saturday, Nov. 16.

Here’s the idea: While parents relax or work in an adjacent cafe/coworking office, their one-to-six-year-old kids can hang out for up to three hours at a time in a supervised play area.

ACT for Alexandria is giving $38,000 to 19 nonprofits and community leaders to dismantle systemic racism and advance racial equity, the nonprofit announced today.

The $2,000 individual donations were made from the organization’s Fund for Racial Equity, and approved projects include a spelling bee for local students, a mobile eye health clinic, and a mentorship program for community pharmacists, according to ACT.
