ALIVE! Gave Away 30,700 Pounds of Food to 1,000 Families on Saturday

ALIVE! handed out four bags of food apiece at its drive-thru food distribution at Cora Kelly School and John Adams Elementary last Saturday morning. (Photo via ALIVE!/Facebook)

ALIVE! gave out 30,716 pounds of food to more than 1,000 Alexandria households on Saturday, and now its shelves are nearly empty.

The 50-year-old nonprofit’s next distribution of food will not be until the end of May, although ALIVE! will continue providing food to local pantries between now and then, said Executive Director Jennifer Ayers.

Casa Chirilagua Thanks Alexandria for ‘Incredible Response’

Casa Chirilagua took to YouTube to thank Alexandria for the recent outpouring of support and to outline ways the organization is trying to help some of the city’s most vulnerable populations.

Casa Chirilagua is a Christian nonprofit in the Chirilagua/Arlandria neighborhood that provides help for local low-income families. Over the last few weeks, as many of these families have lost jobs, Casa Chirlagua has scrambled to help cover rent and grocery needs for the community.

ALIVE! and City Set Up Free Drive-By Saturday Food Pickups

ALIVE! has bought and organized thousands of meals to contend with the COVID-19 pandemic, and for the next two upcoming Saturdays will give away a week’s worth of emergency subsistence food to families and individuals at two drive-by locations.

On the Saturdays of March 28 and April 4, families in their cars will be able to pick up four paper bags of free food at John Adams Elementary School and Cora Kelly School from 8:30 a.m. until noon — or until they run out.

COVID-19 Update: ACPS Not Taking Attendance, Restaurant Considers Closing, Worshipping at Home

The Alexandria City Public Schools will not be tracking student attendance for online learning during its month-long COVID-19 shutdown.

Alexandria City Public Schools announced on Friday that all schools would close until April 14 — after spring break. Every elementary school student was given instructional packets to take home, and students in grades 3-12 went home with Chromebook laptops.

ALIVE! Seeking Donations for Food Distribution to Residents Quarantined by COVID-19

ALIVE! has distributed most its regular food reserves, and now needs cash donations and volunteers to contend with COVID-19.

The Alexandria nonprofit provides food for 13 pantries around the city, and the coronavirus has many wondering how infected residents who are food insecure will get fed. ALIVE! is currently working with the city and buying food to support the city should deliveries need to be made to people under quarantine without food reserves at home.

Work Starts on Potomac Yard Metro — “Monday afternoon workers prepared to clear brush and deliver fill for the new Potomac Yard Metro Station… Environmentalists are against the project because it calls for work in nearly 4-acres of wetlands north of Potomac Greens Drive and west of the George Washington Parkway. Cora Kelly School Receives Donation of New Musical Instruments

The Cora Kelly School for Math, Science, and Technology has received a donation of 16 new musical instruments.

The magnet elementary school was chosen as this year’s beneficiary from Karaoke in the Capital, an annual charity event hosted by the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) in partnership with the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation — a non-profit that donates musical instruments to under-funded music programs.
