The two-year-old mastiff is a large dog currently looking for a new home in the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA).
“At over 100 pounds, Bruce is the largest animal currently at the AWLA,” said Gina Hardter, spokesperson for the AWLA. “But he’s so sweet, we think at least 25 pounds of that must be his big heart. Check out how he dwarfs the kiddie pool!”
The Alexandria Animal Welfare League has been overrun but a veritable vermintide as it seeks to find a new home for five spicy rats.
“Anise, Basil, Nutmeg, Paprika and Saffron may sound spicy, but these ladies are the sweetest rats in town,” said Gina Hardter, spokesperson for the AWLA.
Don’t let his intimidating gaze and sleek demeanor fool you, staff at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria say that Dana is a love bug.
“While young and active, Dana is also an affectionate love bug,” said Audrey Alessi, a spokesperson for the AWLA. “Crouch down to greet him and he’ll put his paws on your lap so you can more easily pet him.”

At a little over a year old, Buck is an excitable and energetic young pup looking for a home in Alexandria.
“He’s also pretty smart, and when treats are involved,” said Gina Hardter, spokesperson for the Animal Welfare League. “He’s excited to learn all kinds of new games and tricks.”
Mr. Patterson may be cute, but the staff at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria where he is currently awaiting say that prospective owners should make no mistake — he is a true gentleman.
“Mr. Patterson may be a bit leonine, but he’s actually just a lionhead rabbit (though he’s just as proud of his majestic mane as any big cat would be),” said Gina Hardter, a spokesperson for the AWLA. “This 2-year-old gentleman’s favorite spots are a well-filled hay bin or a snuggly enclosure with lots of blankets.”
Lucy is not quick to fall in love, but if she can find the right owner, this 13-month old kitten will be a friend for life.
Lucy is a cat up for adoption at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter (4101 Eisenhower Avenue). Gina Hardter, a spokesperson for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, said that Lucy can be reserved at first around new humans.
Shyla is a green gecko who is at least three, though AWLA spokesperson Gina Hardter said she could be older.
As a reptile, Hardter said Shyla is a cold-blooded pet who will need a home that can provide a heat source for her enclosure. Shlya is also an insectivore, but there are a variety of nutritional products that can keep her well-fed with the protein and calcium she needs.
Dub is a little different from most cats.
The eight-year-old cat is up for adoption at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. Gina Hardter, spokeswoman for the AWLA, says Dub has a certain unique trait among the shelter’s cats.
Smokey isn’t half as grumpy or serious as he looks.
The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is hoping to find a home for a staff-favorite pup: Smokey the three-year-old pitbull terrier mix.
