The organization behind National Night Out has recognized Alexandria as one of the best cities of its population size to participate in the annual night of law enforcement engagement.

Alexandria was ranked No. 15 for its “exemplary community involvement” among cities with a population of 100,000-300,000, according to an Alexandria Police Department release. Awards were decided by the National Association of Town Watch, the nonprofit sponsor behind National Night Out.

A 51-year-old man charged with the second-degree murder of Robert Knott in Alexandria’s West End pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity yesterday (Monday).

Ricky Dehate was charged with second-degree murder when Knott, 54, died from his injuries on Sept. 13, 2023, two days after he was kicked and punched unconscious at a bus stop in the 2500 block of N. Van Dorn Street. Dehate’s attorney, Mike Hadeed, doesn’t deny that his client committed the act, but said he did it while having a psychotic episode.

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred near the Holmes Run Trail last night (Monday).

Around 8:15 p.m., a male victim reported to APD that a masked man had approached him with a handgun at the 200 block of S. Jenkins Street before stealing his driver’s license and debit card. The suspect reportedly fled in the direction of the Holmes Run Trail, according to APD dispatches.

First responders transported a man to the hospital early Sunday morning after he accidentally shot himself in the leg in Seminary Hill, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

The 23-year-old man sustained a non-life threatening injury and was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital from an apartment parking lot at the 4600 block of Seminary Road, according to APD dispatches.

The Alexandria Police Department responded to an incident late this morning (Friday) in which a man reportedly shot himself in the leg in Eisenhower West. 

The 43-year-old man told officers he accidentally shot himself while placing a firearm into his pocket, according to dispatches from APD. The man self-reported the incident to police around 11:20 a.m. from the 2800 block of Telek Place.

Police arrested a 17-year-old Alexandria resident on Friday after he allegedly fired a gel pellet gun from a moving vehicle in Old Town.

The Alexandria Police Department was notified around 12:45 a.m. Friday that a suspect was seen firing an air soft gun from inside a vehicle near the intersection of N. West and King Streets, according to radio dispatch reports. No injuries were reported.

No injuries were reported after gunshots were fired in Alexandria’s West End early Saturday night.

The Alexandria Police Department received multiple calls that shots were fired at the 5300 block of Essex Court just before 5 p.m. According to radio dispatches, a group of juveniles were reportedly fighting in the parking lot of an apartment complex when the shots were fired.

A suspect has been arrested following a stabbing in Arlandria last night (Sunday) that left a man with non-life threatening injuries.

The victim was stabbed in the stomach outside an apartment complex around 6:30 p.m. in the 3900 block of Mount Vernon Avenue near Bruce Street, according to APD dispatches. Witnesses who called police told ALXnow that the victim was stabbed multiple times.

The annual St. Rita 5K returns tomorrow morning (Saturday), leading to some road closures in and around Potomac Yard.

The annual road race raises funds for St. Rita Catholic School’s classrooms, teachers and appreciation events for educators. The morning kicks off with a 1K “fun run” race at 8 a.m., before the main 5K race at 8:30 a.m. near George Washington Middle School at 1005 Mount Vernon Avenue.

Two maintenance workers at a West End apartment complex restrained a man last week after he allegedly threatened one of them with a knife.

Alexandria Police Department was alerted to the incident around 4:30 p.m. last Thursday. When police arrived, they found the suspect, an Annandale man, restrained by the maintenance worker and his supervisor, APD told ALXnow via email.
