Alexandria City Public Schools will be returning to school on Monday, Aug. 24, and that means speed cameras will also be reactivated to enforce school zone speeding violations.
The City of Alexandria said enforcement of school zone speed cameras will begin on the first day of school following testing of the school zone flashers and camera systems on Aug. 21. The cameras will automatically issue tickets for speeding violations when school zone signs are flashing.
Speeding violations of at least 10 mph over the 15 mph school zone speed limit can result in a $100 fine. Before a citation is mailed to the vehicle owner, a law enforcement officer typically reviews a violation automatically recorded by a speed camera to verify accuracy.
The 15 mph speed limit applies during school arrival and dismissal times. There is also a midday school zone speed limit for Alexandria City High School’s King Street and Minnie Howard campuses while students travel between campuses.
Recently, the Alexandria Police Department identified a programming issue that was causing tickets to be erroneously issued outside of the enforcement period. The eastbound camera on Seminary Road at Francis C. Hammond Middle School issued 115 citations outside the enforcement period between Aug. 18, 2025 and Feb. 26, 2026. According to APD, those tickets are being cancelled — and refunded if paid.
