A new record for home sales has been set in the City of Alexandria as the historic property known as “Clarens Estate” is officially off the market.

The property at 318 N. Quaker Lane sold for $7.5 million, the highest price a home in the city has sold for, according to Washington Fine Properties. Jaci Appel and Hadley Jones of WFP were the seller’s agents, and Al and Harriet Pricenor of Weichert Realtors represented the buyer.

Tim Laderach, president of the Del Ray Citizens Association, launched a campaign for Alexandria City Council over the weekend.

Laderach, an attorney, pharmacist, U.S. Navy reservist and chair of the Alexandria Economic Opportunities Commission (EOC), is hoping to fill a potential City Council vacancy as Councilman R. Kirk McPike runs for 5th District Delegate. Laderach told ALXnow, “I know what I’m getting myself into, and I’m ready for the moment.”

No injuries were reported after firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire early Sunday morning in the Seminary Hill area.

The Alexandria Fire Department extinguished the blaze at a single-family home in the 200 block of N. Gordon Street at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to IAFF Local 2141.

After experiencing catastrophic flooding earlier this month, Crooked Beat Records will close its doors for good this Saturday.

The local vinyl haven plans to open for its last days at 2417 Mount Vernon Avenue on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Owner Bill Daly said the building’s management wants to do additional repair work, which would require him and his staff to remove all of Crooked Beat’s inventory and then move it back in.

Bookworms of all ages can gather for author discussions and book signings during the Alexandria Library’s Winter Book Festival next month.

The festival is expected to draw more than 20 authors for discussions on their journeys to publishing, as well as to sell and sign copies of their books. The free event is scheduled from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library (717 Queen Street). Registration is not required.

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 26, 1937, the Alexandria City Council approved a proposal by Dr. Robert South Barrett who offered to provide funds to the City to erect a public library in memory of his mother, Dr. Kate Waller Barrett. The City of Alexandria will not collect trash, recycling or yard waste tomorrow (Monday), according to an announcement this afternoon as sleet continues to fall.

Instead, waste collection will “slide” one day as the city’s crews continue to remove snow and ice. The city has released the following collection schedule for the week ahead.

Southbound S. Van Dorn Street at Eisenhower Avenue has been reopened to traffic following a snowplow crash yesterday morning (Sunday).

A snowplow driver with the Virginia Department of Transportation was trapped inside their overturned vehicle at the Fairfax County border after crashing at S. Van Dorn Street and Eisenhower Avenue shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday.
