The U.S. Army has partnered with Alexandria to establish a Community Prevention Leadership Academy aimed at strengthening the military’s efforts to combat suicide and other harmful behaviors among service members, the Army announced Wednesday.

The Directorate of Prevention, Resilience and Readiness and Alexandria signed an Intergovernmental Support Agreement this week to create the academy, which will provide professional development to Prevention Integrators who assist with the Army’s Ready and Resilient Council governance process.

The Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum will host two standout performances this fall as part of its ongoing Traditional Music Series, bringing world-class folk artists to the historic stage once known as “Lyceum Hall.”

Canadian Folk Music Award winners Jocelyn Pettit & Ellen Gira will kick off the fall lineup on Friday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. The dynamic fiddle and cello duo earned the 2024 Traditional Album of the Year award and are known for fusing traditional and contemporary styles into soulful performances. Their shows weave together lively tunes and step-dancing with music from Scotland, Ireland, North America and Scandinavia.

Alexandria police launched a search early Friday morning for a 27-year-old man reported as a critical missing person.

Charles Davon Finley was last seen walking east on the north side of the 300 block of Wythe Street, according to the Alexandria Police Department. Officers described Finley as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Five African-American youths staged America’s first deliberate and planned sit-in at the segregated Alexandria Library on Queen St. on Aug. 21, 1939 — more than two decades before the tactic would become the trademark of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, according to Historic Alexandria.

The protest had its roots in earlier efforts by attorney Samuel Wilbert Tucker and retired Army Sgt. George Wilson, who on March 17, 1939, had walked through the doors of the whites-only library and requested applications for library cards. Library policy prohibited issuing cards to “persons of the colored race.”

Rep. Don Beyer and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton plan to reintroduce legislation requiring federal police officers to use body and dashboard cameras when Congress returns in September.

A Democratic candidate for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District has accused Alexandria Sheriff’s Office deputies of wrongfully arresting him during an eviction Monday morning, despite having what he claims was a pending appeal with the Virginia Court of Appeals.

Frank Ferreira, one of three Democrats challenging five-term incumbent Rep. Don Beyer in the primary, issued a press release early Tuesday morning detailing his arrest at 409 N. Pitt St. on Aug. 18. According to Ferreira’s account, he was arrested for obstruction after requesting to speak with Sheriff Sean Casey during the eviction process.
