Adoptable dog of the Week: Lucas seeks walking buddy as AWLA waives large dog fees

Lucas, a 7-month-old black and white pup with striking blue eyes, is looking for his forever home through the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria’s “Back to School” adoption event.

The 64-pound mixed breed has already mastered leash walking and would make an ideal companion for hiking or neighborhood strolls, according to AWLA volunteer Maria Stebbins. Lucas also excels at fetch and enjoys squeaky toys.

“Lucas has excellent leash manners, which will be great for hikes or city walks,” Stebbins said in an email. “He is a fun-loving dog who plays fetch enthusiastically and will return the ball to you.”

The growing puppy has previous experience living with other dogs and would benefit from positive reinforcement training as he continues to mature.

Lucas is among the dogs eligible for waived adoption fees through Sunday as part of AWLA’s Back to School promotion. The shelter is waiving adoption fees for all dogs weighing 40 pounds or more during the four-day event.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria describes Lucas as a “sweet dog who is kind of chill for such a young pup” despite still having room to grow into his large frame.

Potential adopters can meet Lucas at the AWLA shelter. More information about Lucas (ID: A098362) is available on the shelter’s website at alexandriaanimals.org.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is located at 4101 Eisenhower Ave. For more information, visit alexandriaanimals.org or call 703-746-4774.
