The City of Alexandria will commemorate the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on Thursday, Sept. 11, with a remembrance ceremony at City Hall and a volunteer service project at Alexandria National Cemetery.

More than 200 volunteers are expected to gather at Alexandria National Cemetery from 9 a.m. to noon to clean headstones and beautify the grounds. The volunteer event is organized by Carry The Load, a national nonprofit, and is part of a nationwide initiative spanning nearly 70 national cemeteries where thousands of volunteers will participate in similar acts of remembrance.

Alexandria resident and retired supervisory special agent Jeffrey James Higgins released his latest espionage thriller, “The Khorasan Retribution,” today, Sept. 9. The book is the newest in his Nathan Burke Thrillers series.

The novel follows FBI Special Agent Nathan Burke and his new partner, Bridget Quinn, who find themselves in a fierce shootout outside a mosque in Arlington while intercepting a shipment of Chinese fentanyl. The operation reveals a plot involving a series of deadly terror attacks that use opioids. As the death toll rises, Burke races the clock to identify the terrorists. His investigation uncovers a shadowy figure leading an elite terror cell, the Phantoms of Khorasan, who is driven by revenge.

About 50 family members, friends, and city officials gathered at Alexandria City Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 9, to celebrate the city’s 13 centenarians during the annual recognition ceremony.

The event, held in the Vola Lawson Lobby, honored residents age 100 and older with personalized birthday displays, music from the Alexandria Citizens Band, and a decorated sheet cake reading “Celebrating Alexandria’s Centenarians!”

HRP Group, which is redeveloping Alexandria’s former Potomac River Generating Station power plant site, announced Monday that it has completed its separation from Hilco Global and will operate as an independent company.

The real estate redevelopment firm manages $2.6 billion in assets and oversees more than 23 million square feet of real estate across 2,300 acres in eight major U.S. markets.

Wonder has signed a sublease for its first Alexandria restaurant, securing 3,458 square feet in a Potomac Yard Center building it will share with Chase Bank, according to reporting by the Washington Business Journal.

The food hall concept, which partners with celebrity chefs to recreate their dishes for dine-in or takeout, will occupy roughly half of the 7,000-square-foot building at 3625 Richmond Highway. Chase Bank occupies the remaining 3,500 square feet of the building that formerly housed Hops Grill & Brewery, which closed in January 2020.

The City of Alexandria announced preliminary progress on reducing the size of its controversial waterfront pump station, responding to months of community pushback against flood mitigation infrastructure planned for Waterfront Park.

In a design update posted Sept. 3, project officials said they anticipate reducing the building’s length by approximately 18 to 22 feet, with potential total structure reductions of about 55 feet if the building canopy is eliminated entirely from the design.

A single-vehicle rollover accident closed eastbound Duke Street in the 1600 block Sunday morning, according to Alexandria Police.

The incident, which occurred before 8:56 a.m., resulted in minor injuries to the driver, police said in a social media update. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Alexandria City Council will vote Tuesday on permanently closing the 200 block of King Street to vehicular traffic, following a pilot program that drew overwhelming public support.

The ordinance, which will receive its first reading at Tuesday’s meeting, would make the closure permanent beginning Oct. 1. A public hearing and final vote are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13.
