Got an extra-large pair of scissors handy? There are two ribbon cuttings for local businesses along Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray next month.

On May 10 at 10:30 a.m., expect a crowd to formally cut the ribbon at the Dal Ray Farmhouse Market and Garden at 1913 Mount Vernon Avenue. The business opened last month and is owned by Jay Portlance, who also owns Del Ray Hardware across the street.

A GoFundMe has been launched for Deaundre Jack, the victim of last Saturday’s (April 19) homicide in the West End.

The 19-year-old Jack was shot and killed in the parking lot of 22 Canterbury Square, and his death remains under investigation by the Alexandria Police Department. The fundraiser has so far exceeded its $5,000 goal by raising $5,360 as of 1:30 p.m. Friday (April 25).

The City of Alexandria wants Betsey and H.J. Rosenbaum to know that there will still be a botanical garden built in their honor at Point Lumley Park, despite not being included in site concept plans.

The Rosenbaum family has lived near the waterfront for decades, and several years ago, the couple bequeathed $2.5 million to the city to build the garden at the park. They were surprised, however, when they saw new concept designs published by ALXnow that didn’t include a botanical garden. The plans are headed to the city’s Board of Architectural Review on May 7.

If you’re looking to cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge tonight, be aware that it’s going to be opening just after midnight.

The city announced via Twitter that the bridge along Interstate 495 will close for about 15-to-20 minutes starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday (April 25).

A new cafe has been proposed on King in Old Town.

An administrative special use permit was filed to open Kingsley Cafe on the first floor of 910 King Street. Submitted plans show an extensive interior renovation of the 900-square-foot townhouse built in 1900.

For a moment, Zeina Azzam seemed lost for words.

On Tuesday, Alexandria’s outgoing poet laureate was praised by the City Council for her literary impact on the city. For the last three years, Azzam has written and read 23 original poems at the city’s birthday celebration and other significant events with thousands in the audience. She’s led poetry readings and workshops, visited schools, and judged poetry contests.

No injuries after multiple gunshots were reported early this morning in the area of Ben Brenman Park in Alexandria’s West End.

The Alexandria Police Department was alerted of four gunshots in the area of the park at around 2:20 a.m.

More charges have been filed against a 34-year-old Alexandria man accused of firing and brandishing a handgun from his car at other drivers.

Perry Ellis Barmore was charged with two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony and released to home detention last month for multiple road rage incidents in Maryland in 2024. On April 18, Barmore was arrested by the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Maryland State Police and charged with attempted murder and felony assault.

The Alexandria Police Department has started a 60-day crime plan to focus on larcenies, specifically shoplifting.

The initiative was first announced on APD’s social media pages on April 14. That day, APD posted photos of Officer Bennie Evans visiting shops in Old Town.
