Carpenter’s Shelter is working through the COVID-19 pandemic without its cadre of volunteers, and people are now staying at Alexandria’s largest homeless shelter for longer periods of time, according to the organization’s executive director.

“The days have been long and the challenge is great, but the best perspective on all of this is that our work and our mission has never felt more critical than it does right now,” Carpenter’s Shelter Executive Director Shannon Steene told ALXnow. “We are seeing more people in the shelter for longer periods of time, and all in the context of asking our volunteers not to be volunteering at the shelter for the health and safety of our residents.”

There are Now 36 Cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria — “On March 30, the Alexandria Health Department confirmed four additional cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria, bringing the total to 36. DASH Further Reduces Service — “As part of a wider effort to protect the health and safety of the Alexandria community and DASH employees, DASH implemented an Enhanced Sunday Operating Plan on weekdays and Saturdays, beginning March 30. The March 30-April 5 effort to help out local restaurants impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic was organized by the Virginia Tourism Corporation and Virginia Restaurant, Lodging, and Travel Association.

A man has been charged with grand larceny for allegedly stealing items from a room in the Super 8 Motel at 110 S. Bragg Street on Saturday, March 14.

The victim left her room at 1 p.m. to pay for an additional night at the motel, and afterward left for several hours. When she returned to her room, her valuables were gone. She called police, who found out that a key to the room was mistakenly issued to a new guest at 1:22 p.m., according to a search warrant affidavit.

Toppers Pizza is currently looking for 10 new delivery drivers to work $4.25 an hour plus $2 per delivery and tips. Like their competitors, Toppers is also offering contact-less service.

If Alexandria residents are feeling symptomatic during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Inova hospital system is encouraging them to skip trips to the emergency room by making virtual medical appointments from the comfort of their homes.

Inova, in this period of social distancing, says telemedicine is a convenient way for residents to determine if they should receive additional medical care.

Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson is full of praise for the city’s COVID-19 response efforts, but the hard times are just beginning, he told ALXnow in a recent interview.

“Everyone is trying to find so many different ways to give back,” Wilson said. “It’s been very gratifying and we’re gonna need it because the need is only going to be exacerbated over the next couple of weeks and months, if not longer.”

Alexandria COVID-19 Count Now At 20 — “AHD is identifying and contacting individuals who came in close contact with the confirmed cases. The close contacts will be asked to self-quarantine and actively monitor for fever and respiratory symptoms. If they start experiencing symptoms, they will immediately undergo testing.
