Alexandria’s Traffic and Parking Board will convene on Monday, Oct. 27, to discuss several transportation-related items in the city.

On the docket is a proposal to allow drivers to pay by phone for on-street parking along three residential streets in Old Town — the 900 Block of Cameron Street, the 200 Block of North Alfred Street and the 200 Block of Wilkes Street. The Board will also discuss an appeal to a curb cut at 1612 Princess Street, proposed travel lane and speed limit reductions on Yoakum Parkway and Reinekers Lane, and the removal of parking spaces for crossing improvements on Cameron Mills Road at Woodland Terrace.

The Alexandria Fire Department extricated the driver of a rental truck after a crash in the city’s West End on Wednesday (Oct. 22).

The driver of an Enterprise rental truck crashed into a pole in the area of Seminary Road and Dawes Avenue at around 2 p.m., which is near Northern Virginia Community College. It took more than a half-hour to stabilize the vehicle and remove the driver, according to AFD dispatches.

Alexandria is hosting an open house next month to discuss proposed improvements to a park in the northeast area of Old Town.

Plans to redevelop the 1.5-acre Powhatan Park (1010 Douglas Street) have been in the works for more than a decade. At 11 a.m. on Nov. 1 (Saturday), the city will host the event at the park to discuss three redevelopment options of “medium” importance — creating an ADA-compliant plaza with an entrance at the end of Douglas Street, repaving pathways ,and installing a shade structure and game tables.

Teams of Alexandria kids and parents will visit dozens of stores this weekend to put warning stickers on beer, wine, and other alcohol containers.

The annual Project Sticker Shock Campaign is intended to highlight the consequences of buying alcohol for underage youth. Participating Alexandria City High School students will fulfill their community service requirement by placing warning labels provided by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control on multi-packs of alcoholic drinks.

The Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center is holding a free concert Thursday night (Oct. 23) with music created by youth residents.

The event is the culmination of three days of workshops with the nonprofit Sound Impact, and will be held at the NVJCD (200 S. Whiting Street) from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The Alexandria Board of Architectural Review (BAR) is conducting a work session tonight (Oct. 22) to discuss the certificate of appropriateness for the City Hall, Market Square, and parking garage renovation project.

The BAR approved demolition plans for the project last week, although it deferred the design approvals. The work session was scheduled after last week’s meeting, and city planners are operating on a tight schedule, hoping to break ground in the second quarter of 2026 with a completion goal of 2028, according to the city.

Alexandria will host a community meeting next month on the development of the city’s Flood Resilience Plan.

The city will host the meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 (Monday), at Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Avenue), and online via Zoom. In the meeting, the city will discuss findings from a recent survey on flooding impacts throughout Alexandria, draft flood model results, and a community vulnerability analysis.

TD Bank will reopen at its new location at 525 King Street in Old Town on Saturday (Oct. 25).

The bank is relocating from 119 S. Washington Street, and the grand opening at the new location on King Street will include brief comments from bank leadership, refreshments from neighbor Tatte Cafe and Bakery (535 King Street), a dog treadmill from The Dog Park (705 King Street), caricatures, and live music.

The sale of two large Alexandria properties could settle millions owed to the government by real estate developer and former Connection Newspapers CEO Peter Labovitz, according to a report from the Washington Business Journal.

Inova Alexandria Hospital recently donated a portable lifesaving device to the Alexandria Fire Department.

The ZOLL AutoPulse resuscitation system can cost upward of $7,500, and “delivers consistent, high-quality chest compressions during cardiac arrest, supporting critical care,” according to the AutoPulse website.
